Movie Review: Blood Diamond

"DIA!!!!", shouts Amistad, as he desperately searches for his son.
....ok, so it was supposed to be a seriously dramatic moment that somehow became as comical as Leo DiCaprio's South African accent, but otherwise, Blood Diamond was an incredible movie.
The movie is about Djimon Hounsou's discovery of a huge pink diamond and how he must use the diamond to get his family back. Leonardo DiCaprio offers to help him, but of course he has his own selfish motives for doing so.
The violence and living conditions portrayed in the movie were so surreal. It's sad to think that the scenarios presented in the movie were similar to actual ways of life for the people of Sierra Leone and that made it difficult to accept as a possible reality. To live in fear of losing your family every day is a nightmare.
Equally dreadful is the notion that there's a reputation almost the entire continent of Africa has for fighting itself when the rest of the world discovers something there as valuable from ivory to gold to diamonds. It was funny and a little sad when an old man made the comment that he hopes that noone discovers oil there or else Africa is really in trouble.
Great movie! Rent it on Netflix! :)

Movie Review: Surrogates

Sooo...Surrogates was pretty effing cool. It's set in the near future where noone ever leaves home. They just send surrogates to live life for them and stay home where it's safe. There's barely any crime or disease. EVERYbody has one. You can choose what you look like and everyone appears to be happy with the shell of life they've created. It's like playing a video game of yourself all day long and chillin at home and never worrying about your weight or what you're gonna wear. If your surrogate gets run over by a car, you dont have to worry about health insurance, just use your warrantee. Sweet!
The movie starts with the murder of a surrogate with some type of laser. Normally, it's just be considered vandalism, but this murder also killed the human operator, which is supposed to be impossible. There aren't too many suspects, but of course there's a rebel group that wants to ban surrogates because they believe it's the end of humanity. In a way they had a point. But then *SPOILER* the human rebel leader turns out to be a surrogate himself! AND the human rebel leader was really a surrogate ran by THE MAN. What the crap?! I guess victims of society are all over, no matter what message they're trying to preach.
Bruce Willis plays the good guy cop...AGAIN. Why does he always do that? I mean, I've never seen a police officer or detective that looks like Bruce Willis, but I guess he has one of those faces. I don't know if I would take Bruce Willis seriously if he tried to ask me some questions about a crime, but that's neither here nor there. Anyway... Bruce Willis looked old. Bad makeup and a worse wig. To give him some credit though, the wig was for the surrogate. He was gray and bald as ever when they showed the real Bruce Willis. It was funny that the way his partner knew he was himself and not a surrogate is because he looked a horrible as himself.
Actually, I take back what I said about the makeup being bad. The makeup in this movie was actually pretty impressive. Not for the surrogates, that part was average. I mean, it's Hollywood. Everyone looks perfect. When they showed people looking "normal", is when the movie appeared to have some realism. It was cool to see the contrast of what people really looked like compared to what they presented publicly. They made these beautiful people look really really terrible and tired and you could understand why they would want a surrogate in order to move on with their lives. It was definitely taken to an extreme though. I don't think the world will ever be THAT miserable.
The action sequences were cool. It seemed that the police department gets upgrades to their surrogates so they were able to run faster and jump farther than average surrogate civilians. But that was about as far as cool went, action-wise.
The story itself was pretty entertaining and it made me wonder how far society would be willing to go in order to protect ourselves from each other. How can we improve ourselves if we don't really interact? Is Virtual Living in reality the answer to escaping sickness and violence? I dont know if I would get a surrogate if they really existed, but it makes an interesting point about people who desire perfection without wanting to change themselves.
Overall, excellent film! Go see it! :)
